The Mill

We welcome you to the Molino Santa Cruz (VV-38-5-0001505). Our small holiday home is a 150 year old water mill, beautifully situated above the city center of Santa Cruz de la Palma. As one of four water mills, it is known as Molino de Bellido and described in travel and hiking guides. Enjoy the closeness to the beach and the center, with a sense of peace and seclusion above the rooftops of the city.

If you are looking for a special place for your holiday, this is the place for you. The Molino was partially built into the rock, lovingly restored but originally left. To get there you have to walk the last part on the Camino de Bellido. It goes up 150 steps, followed by 200m hiking trail. This requires a certain physical fitness. Easy to handle for those who want to hike on La Palma.

Absolute Empfehlung!

Location

Urban and rural at the same time – hardly anything describes the situation better than the first words of the land register. On La Palma, this combination is rare. From the Molino Santa Cruz you can walk to the town beach, go shopping or dining and without having to get into a car or bus, enjoy the extensive hiking trails. Or how about a trip to a neighboring island? The ferry port is about 30 minutes within walking distance. Here is a varied holiday without a car possible.

How to get there: It takes about 15 minutes by car or taxi to get from the airport to the beginning of the trail. On the Camino de Bellido, it then goes on for a few minutes on foot. First about 150 steps uphill and then another 200m on the trail. The Molino Santa Cruz is located directly on this little-traveled path and can only be reached on foot. Of course you can also easily travel by bus without changing from the airport to Santa Cruz – the bus stop is only 300m away from the molino.

If you feel comfortable in the north of Tenerife, you will love the east side of La Palma. Here the weather is more varied and the vegetation lush. Our favorite is clearly this side of the island and not the very dry west side promoted by the tourism industry.

Information & Rules

Currently the kitchen only has a cold water connection. The windows and doors do not close tightly, which is very important for the indoor climate. At the same time, geckos can enter the house. These faszinating crepuscular and nocturnal animals are welcome because they are a natural insect repellent and they make insecticides superfluous. If you leave food open despite ants may come in. Please make therefore sure that the garbage is regularly brought to the street and the kitchen is always kept clean or open food is stored only in the fridge or in provided boxes.
Please note that smoking is prohibited inside the house.

Activities

Hiking

Directly from the Molino you can start very different challenging hikes. In the Rother hiking guide three of them are described: the hike to the Mirador de la Conception (with picture of our holiday home), the extremely steep climb to the Cumbre and the top hike through the Barranco de la Madera.
Other worthwhile tours are the circular mill trail over the sanctuary of Santuario de N.S. de Las Nieves, the hike to the Montaña de Tagoja or the more urban walk to the beaches of Los Cancajos. Additional possibilities are the walking distance of the central bus station. This allows one-way tours to be organized.

Entertainment & Culture

In and around Santa Cruz de la Palma there is a lot to discover – an authentic Canarian town with a lot of charm. In addition to numerous cafés and restaurants, there are lively plazas and pretty colonial-style buildings.
The market hall of Santa Cruz is only a mile away from the Molino. On the way you can pass two large supermarkets. The first is directly below our house. In the morning you can have a coffee on the opposite side of the road at a kiosk before strolling further towards the beach and pedestrian area.
In about 45 minutes you can walk to the animal park Maroparque, in about 20 minutes the Museo Insular.

Water sports

Diving: So far we have no diving experience. But maybe this will change soon, as some very good diving spots and diving schools are located near our holiday home. Here is an overview of the best dive sites around La Palma.
Kiten / Windsurfing: On the city beach of Santa Cruz de la Palma you can kite and windsurf. The northeast Passat blows sideshore from the left with moderate freeride conditions. You have to bring your own windsurfing equipment. Brand new is the kite school Kitesurfislabonita.
Surfing: The main surfing spots are Playa Nogales and Playa Los Guirres (Playa Nueva). The beach of Nogales is quite fast reached by car (about 20 minutes). However, the second spot is on the west side of the island and it takes you about an hour to get there.
Klettern La Palma

Climbing

Only a few know that climbing is possible on La Palma. Barranco del Agua and Barranco de la Madera have about 200 climbing routes. The climbing sectors at Barranco de la Madera are about an hour’s walk from the Molino Santa Cruz. Of course, driving is faster. By car you also reach the Barranco del Agua in a few minutes, which is only 8 km away. The difficulties are between franz. 4 to 8, with wall heights of approx. 6 to 30 meters.

Beaches

Whether on foot or by car, the most beautiful beaches on the island are easily reached from our house. Without a car, you can get to the new city-beach of Santa Cruz on foot in about fifteen minutes. But the beaches of Los Cancajos are only about five kilometers away and can be reached with a hike. By car you are in about 20 minutes near Playa Nogales – certainly the most spectacular beach on La Palma.
The very special natural swimming pool Charco Azul can be reached in only 40 minutes by car.
